“When you die, die on empty, leave no dream left behind.”
Sacrifice is the forgoing of present satisfaction for something that means more to an individual in the future. When we think of sacrifice in sports we usually think of an individual sacrificing their personal stats for the good of the team. We think of teams like the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association. But that’s not what we are talking about today. Today, we are talking about internal sacrifice. Sacrificing your time to achieve a goal in the future, whether it is an athletic one, a social one, or even one involving a potential career.
Most people want to achieve their goals, but are not willing to give anything up in order to achieve them. The thing is, nothing in this world can be achieved without an exchange. If you want to buy something you have to pay for it with money. If you want to be a doctor you need to sacrifice 8 years of your life in post secondary education plus 3 years of residency. If you want to be fit you need to sacrifice your favorite foods for healthier alternatives. You need to make sacrifices in order to accomplish your goals.
The one thing that you will find you need to sacrifice again and again is time. Time is our most valuable commodity. It’s the one thing we get control over. The one thing that never stops and keeps ticking away. You need to make sure that you spend your time the way you want it to be spent.
Choose to be Great
Any time I find myself losing motivation and not having the will to continue on a certain journey I have decided to undertake I watch the motivational video below. Its one of my favorite pump up videos because it reminds me that we are the ones who choose to be great. We are the ones who can choose to overcome obstacles and failures to achieve our aspirations, and that we are the ones who choose to take chances, live in the moment, and make sacrifices to achieve our wildest dreams.
Like Robert A. Heinlein once said, “everything is theoretically impossible, until it is done.” For more motivational quotes go to our top 10 most inspirational sports quotes.
Fear of Failure
I think the biggest issue we are dealing with in society today is the pursuit of perfection over the pursuit of passion. Most people try to be something that they physically and emotionally know that they don’t want to be just because they fear failure.
I am going to repeat something that has been said over and over again: taking risks and failing is ok. You will dust yourself off, get back up, and keep fighting another day. Everyone who has ever become something has had to make sacrifices, take chances, and fail over and over again. The biggest failure in life is not taking chances or risks to achieve whatever you have dreamed of achieving. Whether its asking your crush out on a date, moving to Los Angeles to work in the entertainment industry, training to make the NFL, or spending 100 consecutive late nights at the library in order to become an engineer, be like Nike, and “Just Do It”. Mark Twain said it best “twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Don’t forget that your future is in your hands. Choose to pursue your dreams. Choose to take risks and make sacrifices. Choose to be phenomenal. Otherwise, you will be in a place you won’t want to be, doing something you won’t want to do, for someone you probably won’t like. The passion is in the risk. To rephrase a Drake line from his song Thank Me Now “In this world things are taken never given. You will only choose to succeed, it’ll never be their decision.”
